Driving permit in Uganda , Like in many other countries, driving in Uganda requires a valid driving license. Whether you need a learner’s license, a full license, or a new driving license, there is a specific procedure you must follow. To obtain a learner’s license, there are several steps you need to complete. This type of license allows the holder to learn how to drive under the supervision of an instructor. It is typically issued for a renewable period of about 90 days, giving you ample time to practice and prepare for your driving test.

Cost of a Driving License in Uganda

In Uganda, obtaining a new driving license costs UGX 250,000. This payment should be made directly at the bank using a payment slip obtained from the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA). It is advisable to avoid paying through agents to ensure your payment is correctly processed. In addition to the initial cost, there is an extra charge of UGX 80,000 for the production of the driving license.

Cost of Renewing a Driving License in Uganda

Renewing your driving license in Uganda costs UGX 150,000. Similar to obtaining a new license, renewal payments are made directly to the government account through a bank. There is an additional fee of UGX 80,000 for printing the renewed license.

Mandatory Documents for Obtaining a Driving License in Uganda

When applying for a driving license in Uganda, you must present the following mandatory documents:

  1. Valid National ID (for Ugandan Applicants): A valid national ID is required. If you don’t have the original, a duplicate, photocopy, or a NIRA verification letter is also accepted.
  2. For Non-Ugandans:
    • Valid Passport: A passport with a visa that is valid for at least one day is required.
    • Acceptable Visas: Student and diplomatic visas, residence and work permits, and dependent passes are accepted. Tourist visas are not acceptable for new licenses.
  3. For Refugees: A refugee card issued by the Prime Minister’s Office (original copy) is required.
  4. Proof of Payment: You will need a payment registration number, which can be obtained from the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) or the Ministry of Works and Transport e-services portal. This proof of payment is essential to proceed.
  5. Learner License: The original learner license must be provided.
  6. Certificate of Competence: Issued by the Police Inspectorate of Vehicles (IOV), this certificate is necessary to demonstrate your driving competence.
  7. Certificate of Completion: This is obtained from a licensed driving school after you have completed your training.
  8. Fully Filled-Out Driving License Application Form: Ensure that the application form is completed accurately.
  9. Fully Filled-Out Medical Examination Report: The medical examination report is part of the learner driving license and driver license application form. If you already completed this section for your learner license within the last six months, it remains valid for your full driver license application.

Note: The Uganda Driver Licensing System (UDLS) does not accept cash at their branches. Payment assessments must be generated via the URA website or the Ministry of Works and Transport e-service portal, and payments can be made through any bank, mobile money, or PayWay.
